Where does ChatGPT get prices when it compares stores?

Often from price-comparison sites and deal posts, not the retailer's own product page. In our test, some of that data was weeks old.

Updated

When Core dna asked ChatGPT where products were cheapest, the answers cited or linked price-comparison sites such as BuyWisely, PriceKoala, Buy Cheap, staticICE and PriceHound, as well as deal posts. The Garmin Forerunner 265 price came from comparison data ChatGPT said was last updated 40 days earlier, and the page it linked for the Kindle Paperwhite showed prices last checked in August. These sources lag behind the retailer's own site, especially when a sale starts or ends.

Asked about a single retailer's product page, ChatGPT is far more accurate: it gave the right price for 43 of 51 retailers in our September test. The problem shows up when it has to compare stores. See our September findings for why ChatGPT shows the wrong price for products.
